A house dictated by the need to escape from the urban world to nature, where natural light sets the rhythm of daily life, was designed by Hanna Batyńska and Maksymilian Stasica of Wydział Architektury Politechniki Warszawskiej. Their project was shortlisted as a finalist in "The Home of Shadows" competition organized by the Buildner platform.

This is another Polish success in this competition. The third place in it went to Anna Jaruga-Rozdolska for her design of a house at 13 Wschodnia Street in Lodz, which does not need lamps.

A house of light or a lighthouse on a lake

In their competition entry, Hanna Batyńska and Maksymilian Stasica created a design for a house called "The Lighthouse." Although lighthouse in English means lighthouse , in this case the word can be understood literally, as light house, or house of light, because it is the light that plays the main role in the design.

The morning rays enter the interior at the right time, the light in the dining room indicates the optimal moment for a meal, and the plants in the greenhouse develop in ideal conditions. This kind of architecture encourages reflection on the pace of modern life and promotes the restoration of balance between body, mind and nature

The house was located on the shore of Lake Czorsztyńskie, in the picturesque Pieniny Mountains. Its single-story body houses a kitchen combined with a living room, one bedroom and a bathroom.

The layout of the house is dictated by the availability of natural light, hence its open form. This is also served by elongated panoramic windows, or fenêtre en longueur, and a skylight running the entire length of the building, thanks to which light spreads evenly in the interior.

The heart of the concept is the centrally located light chimney. It is a structure that extends above the roofline. As the authors describe, the chimney acts as an intermediary between the interior and the sky, reaching the light despite the limitations imposed by the dense forest surrounding the building. The chimney additionally serves as a greenhouse, which not only symbolically highlights the life-giving energy of sunlight, but at the same time allows year-round cultivation of plants, thanks to the use of translucent panels.

traditional cottage with modern flash

The design of the house is based on an analysis of traditional Pieniny cottage construction, which became our starting point for a contemporary interpretation of form, material and relationship with the landscape. We designed a simple body, referring to the archetypal form of a house with a gabled roof, but integrated with modern spatial and material solutions

- says Maksymilian Stasica.

The façade of the building was made of fired wood, which is characterized by high durability and resistance to weather conditions. Its dark, matte surface makes the facade contrast with the light, which plays a major role in the project, while blending harmoniously into the surrounding forest.

What's more, the body of the house is blended into the terrain, which serves not only for visual value, but also helps reduce wind exposure and improve thermal performance in the building.

The need to return to living in harmony with nature is becoming increasingly apparent in a world saturated with stimuli. The relentless pace of large agglomerations leads to exhaustion and burnout, and disconnection from the original rhythms of nature has become commonplace. Technological advances allow the day to lengthen and the night to shorten, while disrupting the natural diurnal cycle and imposing routines contrary to the biological essence of human existence.

- explain the authors.

Congratulations on your success!
