"In the footsteps of the architecture of the Warmian countryside - get to know it, find its atmosphere, express yourself creatively while respecting the existing heritage" - this was the motto of the architectural workshops and experimental full-time classes within the subject of Architecture and Village Planning, at Wydział Architektury Politechniki Warszawskiej.
Those participating in the program, on the basis of the materials collected already in the stationary classes, made an analysis of the value of the cultural landscape, and above all an analysis of the distinctive and special architecture of the Warmian countryside, but also designed new buildings. Their work is not only evidence of a deep respect for the traditions of the Warmian countryside, but also a response to the modern needs of the area's residents.

The goal of the workshop was also to answer the question "How to protect the cultural heritage of the Warmian countryside from disharmonizing buildings?". The class was conducted by Dr. arch. Ewa Widera of the Department of Residential Environment under the direction of Dr. hab. arch. Karolina Tulkowska-Słyk, a professor at the university, and M.Sc. student arch. Kacper Czubek.
how was the traditional Warmian village shaped?
The research area was selected rural villages in the municipality of Lidzbark Warmiński, located about 50 kilometers north of Olsztyn. The study subjects undertook an analysis of the panorama and silhouette of the villages, the forms of buildings, the characteristic detail and the materials used there. They also paid attention to natural, landscape and transportation conditions.
The current expression of the Warmian village is a reflection of its tangible and intangible heritage. Its formation was also, or perhaps primarily, influenced by natural factors, numerous hills and hills richly decorated with gutter lakes perpendicular to the moraine. This is a special heritage from the point of view of the values it carries with it. Why protect this heritage? it is obvious, it is our common and not only national good, it is a good present in the consciousness of a Warmian Pole and a Warmian German, it is everything connected with thehistory of these lands in the period of their presence on it, with the history of the known and the history of the silent, which is valuable and should form the community of a uniting Europe
- comments Ewa Widera, workshop leader.
Urban interiors - Kłębowo

The workshop covered thematic inventories from three main aspects. On the urban level, they included rural and natural landscapes, village panoramas, urban interiors, and the characteristic layout of existing buildings. On the architectural level, those studying analyzed building forms, distinguishing between residential, livestock, farm and other buildings, also paying attention to the building materials used at the time. Another area of their research concerned Warmian architecture, its form and detail. Discordant elements in terms of landscape and architecture were also analyzed.
One-story, wooden, brick with thatched roofs, ceramic tiles - what were the old Warmian houses like?
As a result of the first stage, which dealt with urban, transportation and natural environment analyses, the class created urban plans of the villages: Blanki, Kłębowo, Nowa Wieś Wielka, Kochanówka and Kraszewo.
Kraszewo - urban planning board
designed by: Igor Guz, Cezary Kostecki, Szymon Krejtz, Jan Kusznieruk, Mikolaj Kycia, Maksymilian Plewa, Tymoteusz Przychodzień
An extensive analysis of the village of Kraszewo was proposed by a group composed of Igor Guz, Cezary Kostecki, Szymon Krejtz, Jan Kusznieruk, Mikolaj Kycia, Maksymilian Plewa and Tymoteusz Przychodzień. On the maps they created, the functions of the buildings and communications were identified.
The authors of the charts note the predominance of one-story buildings with a usable attic built of brick or fieldstone, covered with roofs made of ceramic tiles or straw. They also noted the repeated symmetry in the masses of the buildings and the relatively large windows, as well as the multitude of details decorating the facades. Their analysis also showed a clear oval or street rural layout, with a central square around which compact buildings were concentrated.

A group composed of Michalina Golda, Zosia Gorska, Antek Jakubiec, Michal Kowalski, Emilia Romowicz and Mela Wozniak developed an analysis of the village of Kłębowo. Their work shows the percentage of identified building materials in the village, and a map describing the urban composition is also included. The charts also include an analysis of greenery and a comparison of maps of the village before the war with the current state of development.
Aleksandra Górecka, Zofia Karasek, Julia Koszowska, Natalia Runowska and Julia Szwajczak are the authors of the urban planning board for Nowa Wieś Wielka, which includes a functional map of buildings along with photographs of characteristic buildings such as plastered and brick residential buildings, a church and a community center.

Adam Dziedzic, Katarzyna Milewska, Jan Królikowski, Ur szula Suchowierska, Bartłomiej Prusaczyk are the authors of the urban planning analysis of Blanki village. They made a photographic inventory characteristic of the village's buildings, as well as the author's hand-drawn panoramas of the village and architectural details of the existing buildings.

They reflect the climate of the region, through the application of strict rules guaranteed harmony of the spatial layout. It is the form of buildings that gives them the main spatial scheme, which directly translates into the cultural landscape," adds Ewa Widera.
New functions in old walls?
As part of the final stage of the workshop, those studying individually worked on selected design topics. The selection of an individual design theme was preceded by a discussion about the village and its future, as well as on the basis of interviews with the local village community.
In the end, more than 20 individual works were created . Participants undertook the design of facilities such as village common rooms with new functions, single-family houses. There were also designs for the adaptation of rural facilities for sports centers. We will present them in detail in upcoming articles.
The instructors emphasize the importance of the students' approach to design for the execution of the projects was the design maturity of the students and their respect for the historic fabric of the Warmian countryside. Currently, their work can be seen in the Community Cultural Center in Pilnik, Lidzbark Warmiński Municipality.
