Mitsubishi Electric heat pump efficiency at low temperatures - the perfect solution for cold winters

from the series "Heating, air conditioning and ventilation - trends 2025"

In an era of growing concern for the environment and increasing restrictions on traditional heating sources, the choice of an efficient, ecological and reliable heating system is crucial. For residents of regions with harsh climates, such as mountainous areas, northern Poland and Scandinavia, a solution worthy of special attention are heat pumps from Mitsubishi Electric, especially models from the Ecodan and Zubadan series.

Mitsubishi Electric has launched a high-tech line of heat pumps that perform well in extreme conditions. Zubadan Inverter technology is a patented solution that enables stable and efficient operation even at temperatures as low as -28°C. What's more, these pumps retain full heating power at -15°C without the need for support from electric heaters. Such efficiency is achieved thanks to innovative components, such as a double expansion valve and an optimized heat exchanger.

Seasonal efficiency (SCOP) and COP remain high, ensuring low operating costs even in sulfurous cold weather. For example, a COP in excess of 2.5 at -15°C indicates very good energy efficiency. An additional advantage is the ability to achieve a feedwater temperature of 60°C without the support of heaters, which allows cooperation with low-temperature radiators and floor heating systems.

Compressors used in Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan heat pumps are distinguished by advanced design and technology, ensuring high efficiency even at extremely low temperatures. A key element is the use of scroll compressors, which are characterized by their simple design and low failure rate. Going further, selected Mitsubishi Electric pump models use a system with two compressors: a main inverter compressor with adjustable speed frequency and an additional ON/OFF compressor. Such a configuration allows the heating power to be efficiently adjusted to current needs, minimizing the risk of cycling the compressor on and off (known as clocking), which translates into a longer life of the unit.

In addition, the use of R290 (propane) refrigerant in the new Ecodan R290 models makes it possible to achieve high flow temperatures (up to 75°C) even at an outdoor temperature of -15°C, and the units maintain full heating power at -15°C without the need for electric heater support. These compressors are also equipped with advanced control systems, such as inverter technology, which allows for infinitely variable output according to heat demand, resulting in lower energy consumption and higher thermal comfort.

With these solutions, Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan heat pumps provide reliable and efficient heating even in harsh climatic conditions, offering users thermal comfort while reducing operating costs.

Why are Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps the ideal choice for cold climates? First, there is no geographical limit to their application today. They have been operating successfully for several decades in the cold regions of Japan, where they have earned a reputation for reliability. They are extremely popular in Scandinavia and the Alpine countries. In Poland, you will find heat pumps in single-family homes in Podhale, as well as in hotels and hostels - such as on Mt. Turbacz, where winter weather conditions are extreme - large temperature drops and frosts and high snow cover. They work effectively in regions with low average annual temperatures, where diurnal differences are also sometimes significant. For many years they have been heating single-family homes, mountain huts, guesthouses and hotels in harsh climatic conditions.

The arguments for using these pumps are numerous. Thanks to the possibility of integration with a photovoltaic system, it is possible to achieve almost zero operating costs for the building - both in terms of heating and hot water production. This is also a technology that is fully in line with anti-smog and environmental policies, eliminating the need for fixed-fuel boilers in areas without access to gas.

Mitsubishi Electric pumps are characterized by their versatility and scalability - models from 4 to 100 kW are available, which can be combined into cascades. This allows them to be used in single-family homes, multi-family buildings, as well as commercial and industrial facilities.

Proper selection of the heat pump is crucial. It is necessary to take into account the heat demand of the building, the type of heat consumers (floor, radiator, fan coils), the structure of the heating system and the number of residents. It is also worthwhile to provide for an appropriate DHW tank. Therefore, it is recommended that the selection of the device be handled by a designer or experienced installer.

In conclusion, Mitsubishi Electric heat pumps, especially those from the Zubadan and Ecodan series, are proven, efficient and environmentally friendly heating solutions for areas with a frigid climate. Through their use, we gain thermal comfort, energy savings and a contribution to improving air quality and fighting smog. This is the technology of the future, which is already responding to the challenges of modern construction and a changing climate.
