The URBANMODEL team operating at the Faculty of Architecture at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice once again proves that educational games can be an effective tool for popularizing urban planning and architecture. After the award-winning projects "Game in the Estates" and "Game in the Metropolis of GZM", the time has come for another study - "Game in Katowice".

This is a unique set of cards that combines fun with learning about the city and brings residents and tourists closer to the complex urban structure of Katowice. The project was created under an agreement with the city of Katowice, and its goal is to spread knowledge about urban space and the history of the capital of Upper Silesia.

the city in 81 cards
"Game of Katowice" is a set of 81 cards that can be used for both classic card games and specially prepared games.
-
The52 cards correspond to a traditional deck - each depicts a characteristic place from one of the city's 22 districts. On the obverses you will find graphics of buildings and public spaces, such as the Spodek, the NOSPR headquarters or KTW office buildings. They are accompanied by numerical data: the area of the district, the number of inhabitants, the share of green areas or the number of walking and bicycle trails.
-
The reverses of the cards, when laid out, form a map of Katowice with administrative boundaries and pedestrian and bicycle routes. They are supplemented with QR codes that lead to 3D models of selected objects available in the browser and augmented reality.

As the authors emphasize, the set is designed to teach through play, encouraging users to explore the city in different dimensions - from the cards on the table, to mobile apps, to direct experience of the space in the field.
fun and learning for everyone
The game is designed for audiences aged 5 and up. It can be played classically, but can also be used with dedicated variants, including:
-
KATO-PUZZLER - arranging a map of Katowice from the reverses of the cards,
-
KATO-MEMO - a memory game using the obverses,
-
15-Minute Journey - a quick game discovering the city's assets,
-
KATO-INSIDERS or KATO-AGENT - educational variants developing knowledge about space.
This makes "Game of Katowice" accessible to all age groups, from children to adults.
theory and practice
The publication is accompanied by a bilingual study "Game of KATOwice. Models of the structure of the city of Katowice: card game" ("KATOwice game. Models of the Katowice city: card game"). The authors used Kevin Lynch's "Image of the City" theory, identifying key landmarks and urban symbols of Katowice. The 3D models and graphics on the cards help to understand the potential of the various districts and their importance in the city's structure.
We wanted the cards not only to entertain, but also to systematize knowledge about Katowice and allow us to see the city as a whole," emphasize the authors of the study.

another step in the popularization of knowledge
"Playing Katowice" is part of a broader series of activities of the team led by Prof. Tomasz Bradecki. Previously created include "Game in the Estates", also awarded internationally, and "Game in the Metropolis of GZM". All these initiatives are united by the idea of an innovative approach to the popularization of urban planning and spatial planning.
The game is now available on the e-store of the Silesian University of Technology. More information and details about the project can be found at
