New trends in patio and terrace design: Creating the perfect place to relax during the summer months

Morning coffee in the fresh air, dinner with the family accompanied by birdsong or meeting with friends at a barbecue? During the summer months, we want to spend as much time outside as possible. And being outside in beautiful surroundings is even more enjoyable! Create a fashionable and functional terrace that will be a natural extension of your living room on warm days. What trends in terrace and patio design are worth paying attention to this and next season?

Designing a terrace - what is worth keeping in mind?

It's great if the terrace is aesthetically pleasing, fashionable and refined even to the smallest detail. However, it's worth remembering that it's a space that should, above all, be functional, practical and suited to your and your family's lifestyle. What are the basic elements of living room furnishings that you can't forget?

  • Furniture - it is the furniture that turns an ordinary home space into a comfortable place for relaxation. Choose furniture that best suits how you spend your free time. If you often get together with friends or a large family and like to throw barbecue parties, make sure your terrace has a large, comfortable table. If you're more likely to spend time lounging on the terrace with a book, for example, choose a comfortable garden sofa with soft cushions, a Brazilian chair or a classic hammock, perfect for an after-lunch nap.

  • Canopy - a properly chosen canopy will protect you from the scorching sun on hot days and shield you from the fleeting summer rain. For example, you can opt for an awning, a pergola or a polycarbonate or wood canopy. A large umbrella or a so-called "sail", i.e. a large sheet hung over the entire terrace or just a part of it, will also be a good choice.

  • Lighting - appropriately chosen lighting is necessary to be able to spend time on the terrace also in the evening. You can bet, for example, on classic wall sconces, a string of light bulbs hung under the canopy, or atmospheric lanterns that give a soft, moody light.

  • Decorations - that is the absolute icing on the cake of patio decor. The basic decoration of a patio or terrace is most often plants in decorative pots, but you are really only limited by your imagination. Remember soft cushions and other textiles. You can put a thin rug on the floor, and spread candles on the windowsill. Natural herbs will also look beautiful. They will not only become a decoration, but also enrich the dishes coming out of your kitchen.

If you are creating your terrace from scratch, choosing the right flooring will also be a very important element. You can opt for natural wood, composite, pavers, tiles or concrete slabs. Each of these options has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's worth thinking through each of them to choose the floor that best suits your expectations and needs.

Boho style terrace

Boho and scandi boho styling is an absolute hit of this season, which is sure to stay with us for a long time. When arranging a terrace in this style, choose furniture made of natural materials, such as wicker, rattan or wood. Such arrangements must also not lack textiles - especially those in light, beige shades. Pillows, plaids, rugs - those woven or with tassels, as well as airy curtains are elements worth remembering when arranging such a space. Decorations such as macramé, braided lanterns or ornaments made of delicate feathers should also not be missing.

Mediterranean patio

A Mediterranean-style patio will make you feel like you're on vacation every day while drinking your morning coffee. Mediterranean style has a lot in common with nautical style. There is a lot of white, light blue and dark navy blue. Striped patterns and decorations with sea-related motifs go well with such an arrangement. In a Mediterranean arrangement, furniture made of natural wood, rattan or technorattan will look beautiful.

Practical and minimalist terrace

Minimalist arrangements are one of the most fashionable trends in terrace design. However, it is worth remembering that minimalism does not necessarily have to mean a cool and austere arrangement. Minimalist terraces are also those where the focus is 100% on functionality. In such spaces there are no random objects, and every, even decorative detail, has a specific function.

The strongest trends in terrace design

What else is worth paying attention to when arranging a fashionable terrace in line with the latest trends? What solutions to choose so that it is not only fashionable, but also comfortable and practical?

  • Second-hand furniture - instead of buying new furniture, check what you already have at home! Renovating an old wooden bench can very often be more beneficial than buying a new piece of furniture from a chain store. It is better for the aesthetics of the terrace, the wallet, and our planet.

  • Ecology - the use of second-hand furniture is very much in line with the eco trend, which is increasingly visible both in interiors and in our terraces. In addition to using second-hand furniture, it is also worth giving up plastic on the terrace, choosing furnishings made of natural materials, and using the most beautiful things as decorations - plants and colorful flowers. Be sure to pay attention to varieties in the color Viva Magenta, which has been chosen as the color of the year 2023 by the Pantone Institute, such as carnations, azaleas and rhododendrons.

  • Vertical gardens - if we are already talking about plants, a real hit in the arrangement of fashionable living rooms are also vertical gardens, i.e. those that climb vertically on the wall. Such a mini-garden can be a great alternative, for example, to a terrace side protection made of artificial material, which is supposed to protect from the sun and neighbors' glances.

Arranging a terrace that is practical, comfortable and in line with the latest trends takes time and a proper plan. However, it is worth spending some energy on the project to create a clear vision of this space and, when buying furniture, to maintain a consistent stylistic line.
