Today's cities are facing increasing challenges related to urbanization, climate change and rainwater and snowmelt management. Innovative building materials such as water-permeable pavements can play a key role in countering the effects of these phenomena. This solution combines functionality, aesthetics and environmental responsibility, making it an attractive choice for urban architects and planners.
What are concrete water-permeable pavements?
PERVIA concrete water-permeable pavements, is a solution with an open structure that allows water to flow over its surface. Their key feature is high permeability, achieved through a controlled amount of voids in the structure of the material. Thanks to the use of larger aggregates and the minimization of fine aggregate fractions, pores remain in the structure of the concrete, which allow the free flow of liquids and air.
Advantages of using water-permeable concrete pavements
Water-permeable concrete allows for efficient management of rainwater. In cities built with impermeable pavements, rainwater runs down surfaces into storm drains, which often leads to overloaded drainage systems and causes local flooding during heavy rainfall. PERVIA allows water to infiltrate naturally into the ground, reducing the risk of flooding and reducing the load on storm drains.
With its ability to retain and slowly drain water into the ground, cavernous concrete supports nature's natural water cycle. It also helps reduce the urban heat island because it does not retain heat the way traditional asphalt pavements do. Water-permeable concrete fits in with the idea of sustainable construction. It reduces the negative impact of urbanization on the environment and can be used in projects seeking multi-criteria certification, such as LEED or BREEAM.

Versatility of applications
PERVIA can be used on sidewalks, parking lots, bicycle paths, plazas, and even in parks or rain gardens. The availability of concretes of different colors, allows the creation of aesthetically pleasing pavements that fit in with the objectives of modern urban spaces. Water-permeable concrete is particularly suitable for green space revitalization projects, where the goal is to create a space that harmoniously combines utility functions with the needs of the environment.
Durability and functionality, an important aspect of technical parameters
In order for water-permeable concrete to perform its functions, attention must be paid to several key technical aspects. Concrete pavements made of PERVIA cavity concrete are characterized by water permeability of more than 100l/min/m2. Compressive strength should be a minimum of 20 MPa, which is sufficient for passenger vehicle traffic and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 T. It is important to use a suitable drainage layer under the concrete, such as broken aggregate, which will allow water to drain effectively into the ground. The recommended thickness of the water-permeable concrete layer for parking lots is 20 cm, which ensures durability and load resistance. PERVIA should be laid under suitable weather conditions, avoiding excessive drying of the surface during setting.

A new look at urban spaces
Water-permeable concrete pavements are a material of the future that can make a significant contribution to sustainable urban development. Its use allows not only for efficient management of rainwater, but also for improving the aesthetics and functionality of urban spaces. The ability to color and shape the pavement means that water-permeable concrete can be tailored to the visual requirements of a project. For architects and urban planners, it provides an excellent tool for creating modern, environmentally friendly and climate-resilient urban environments.
