How do you choose a table for your interior that not only looks good but is also functional? Wojciech Paszylk from Industrialni Studio discusses how to design a piece of furniture that will serve as the heart of your home .

Industrialni Studio is a young design studio founded out of a love for natural wood and craftsmanship. It specializes primarily in the production of dining tables and coffee tables, but its lineup also includes other pieces of furniture, such as console tables, chests of drawers, desks, and vanity tables. As they say themselves, they’re open to custom and creative projects.

1. What style currently dominates interior design when it comes to furniture?
Based on our observations, minimalist and timeless forms are predominant. Furniture should be simple but feature an interesting detail, such as a cutout in the tabletop or rounded edges. Dark and brown-toned wood is currently very popular in interiors, which we’re very happy about, as it’s always a stylish choice that brings elegance to a space. We’re also seeing a lot of inspiration from the Japandi style, such as natural, organic forms and rounded shapes.

2. What type of wood do we usually choose when designing a table, and why?
In our studio, we most often work with ash or oak —depending on the client’s preferences. This is because these are hard and durable woods, making them ideal for furniture. They differ in grain pattern and color, but both options have their fans.

3. How do you choose a table that’s not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional?
First of all, a great deal depends on the size of the room where the table will be placed. If space is limited, an extendable table is the perfect solution . You should also ensure that the table’s proportions are appropriately chosen, allowing for comfortable seating. The dimensions of the chairs are also important. Crucially, the table’s height should be chosen according to personal preferences and needs —a different height will work for someone who is 190 centimeters tall than for someone who is 150 centimeters tall.

4. Is the table the most important piece of furniture in the home? If so, why?
It’s up to the household members to decide which piece of furniture in the home is the most important, but the table certainly has what it takes to be a strong contender. After all, it’s where we eat meals together, gather to talk or play games, and often work as well. It’s a piece of furniture that encourages us to spend time together —it’s the heart of the home!

5. Do any of your projects hold special significance for you?
Every project is unique to us, but if we had to pick one, it would be the oval table on double-layered legs. That project from March 2026 really stuck with us. The table was custom-made for our client—it had an oval top measuring 100x220 centimeters and could be extended using two extension leaves to 100x300 centimeters.

The client wanted to maintain a uniform tabletop surface without any visible divisions —hence the idea for a system of side extensions. The rounded elements allowed the table to be extended for special occasions and, in our opinion, also created a very interesting visual effect.
The client also wanted to maximize the space for chairs around the table, so we additionally spaced the table legs further apart. Our studio prides itself on meeting our clients’ needs whenever possible.

The table stands on four double-layered legs, each consisting of two wooden elements joined together. We’re already quite familiar with simple wooden bases, so we wanted to add an interesting detail to them—we opted for strongly rounded edges. We crafted the table from solid oak and stained it an intense brown color.

5. What should you look for when choosing a table and other furniture?
Personally, we’d suggest paying attention first and foremost to the material the furniture is made of. A huge advantage of wood is that it can be restored. If it happens that something gets scratched or we grow tired of the color, it won’t be a problem, because in most cases, we can sand down the wood and refinish it.

It’s also important to consider what the wood is treated with and how—this process protects the material from moisture and dirt. Keep in mind that the table should be functional and suited to the needs of both the owner and the interior, and above all, we should simply like it! Let’s make our “interior design” dreams come true. We spend a lot of time in our homes and apartments—let them be places we look forward to returning to.
