Family apartment with a view of Gdańsk

28 of February '23

The 109-meter apartment is located on the top floor of the building, overlooking a quiet part of Gdańsk's Wrzeszcz district. The right height provides a perspective that is conducive to admiring the views. Plenty of natural light comes in during the day and it's this that makes the apartment, designed by Zuzanna Pikiel and Agata Piltz of the P2 Pikiel & Piltz studio, fully bring out its character.

Family space

The apartment for a large family was to be, above all, cozy and provide plenty of space for spending time together. At the same time, on the functional side, the space required clever solutions that would facilitate the organization of a family of five.

- When designing a living room with a kitchenette, we assume that the built-in must be a piece of furniture in the living room, so to speak. What we care about is that when sitting on the sofa, we don't have the feeling that we are relaxing in the kitchen. This popular solution also has another advantage that is so much recognized by most - the best meetings and events take place right in the kitchen. For this reason, the kitchen is drawn into the rest of the room in terms of color - a common development from the entrance area - cabinets or a passageway to other rooms - makes the interior feel cohesive and therefore calmer - says Zuza Pikiel, interior designer at P2 Pikiel & Piltz.

Noble materials

Quality, natural materials appear throughout the apartment. The stone on the countertop was personally chosen by the clients with the help of the architects. On the floor appeared a beautiful natural plank in large format and parquet laid in French herringbone.

- We like to take care of the details - we emphasized the varied divisions in the arrangement of the boards with inserts of brass strips. With time they will gain character, grow old, darken and scratch, but this is not a drawback for us. We don't want the apartment to be indestructible, like a museum. This is where life is supposed to take place. There will be traces of the whole family on this floor and no one will notice it. And the wooden floor will always be something they should have decided on - says Agata Piltz, an architect from the P2 Pikiel & Piltz studio.

Refined details

The clients have a sense of aesthetics close to the designers, so selecting furnishings for the house was a sheer pleasure. The owners appreciated the workmanship of the items and the furniture from Polish manufactures. The bedside tables as well as the dressing table in the bedroom and the chest of drawers in the living room came from a studio in Gdynia.

- This dresser hides a surprise - in its middle drawer a short-focus projector fit perfectly. After sliding out the drawer - you can watch movies on the wall above the dresser, without having to pull the projector out on top. And on a daily basis it remains invisible! - points out Zuza Pikiel.

In the living room, the first fiddle is played by a beautiful table, which can easily accommodate a family of five. The furniture also has the ability to unfold.

- From the beginning of our cooperation, we had a common path - the owners of the apartment were compatible among themselves and convinced of their dreams or choices. This makes a lot easier in the design process - when a couple is confident in their decisions and open to suggestions - you can be 99% sure that the result will be mutually satisfactory. However, when we were invited by our clients for a coffee in the new apartment almost a year after the project was handed over - we were both overjoyed - the apartment was finished and furnished according to the design and all suggestions, and the additions made fresh by the residents - they complemented the main base fantastically. It was clear that even at the final stage there was no question of compromise - recalls Agata Piltz.
