Wood brings incredible charm to interiors. However, in order for it not to lose its aesthetic appeal over time, it should be properly cared for. Varnishing wooden furniture is a great way to give it a new look, protect it from damage and bring out the natural beauty of the wood. Here is a detailed step-by-step guide on how to properly varnish wooden furniture.
Prepare the work area
Choose a well-ventilated space, preferably outside or in a room with open windows and adequate ventilation. Then protect your work surfaces with painter's film or old newspapers to avoid dirt.

Preparation of the furniture
Remove dust, dirt and greasy stains with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Allow to dry. If the furniture was previously painted or varnished, remove the old layer with sandpaper (80-120 grit) or a special agent. Then level the surface with sandpaper of finer grit (150-220). This will make the new varnish stick better to the wood. Clean the furniture from dust, using a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.

Choice of varnish
You can use water-based varnish (eco-friendly, quick-drying) or solvent-based varnish (more durable, but with a more intense smell). In addition, you have a choice of three finishes: matte, semi-matte or glossy. Choose the formulation that best suits your needs, but make sure the product is designed for wood.

Varnishing a piece of furniture
To ensure even coverage and better adhesion of the varnish, you can use a special primer for wood. If you decide to do so, apply a thin coat with a brush or roller and let it dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Apply a thin layer of varnish with a brush, foam roller or spray. Guide the tool according to the direction of the wood grain. Avoid applying too thick a coat to prevent streaking. Allow to dry. Drying time depends on the type of varnish, information can be found on the product package.
After the first coat has dried, gently sand the surface with very fine-grit sandpaper (320-400) to remove irregularities. Remember to clean the surface of dust before applying the next coat.
Repeat the painting and intercoat sanding process 2-3 times, depending on the effect you want to achieve. Each successive coat increases the durability and gloss of the surface.
Finishing and care of varnished furniture
After applying the last layer of varnish, let the furniture dry completely. This can take from a few hours to a few days, depending on the type of varnish. Avoid heavy use of the furniture for the next few days to allow the varnish to fully cure. Use a soft cloth and mild detergents to clean the furniture so as not to damage the surface.
Varnishing wooden furniture requires patience, but the result will certainly reward the effort put in. With proper preparation and care, your furniture will get a new life and keep its beautiful appearance for years to come!
