"Iron" replication! Restoration and construction of a duo of townhouses iconic to Poznan completed

21 of May '20

Marriage of history and modernity - new building of the complex using Aluprof aluminum systems

Work on the reconstruction and construction of one of the most recognizable symbols of Poznań has come to an end. The famous "Iron" is today a complex of two residential buildings - a revitalized century-old tenement house and a new, contemporary urban building. Among other things, the newly built part uses high-tech ALUPROF aluminum systems.

Poznań icon back in the center

Poznan's iconic townhouse has a rich history. The imposing Neo-Renaissance building at the intersection of Ogrodowa and Krysiewicza Streets was built in 1900 on a characteristic triangular plot. For years it was one of the architectural gems of the Old City, and due to the similarity of its massing to New York's Flatiron Building skyscraper it earned the nickname "Iron." However, during demolition work carried out in 2011 on a neighboring building, the "Iron" was damaged. The damage was so severe that it was decided to demolish the historic building as well. Six years later, reconstruction began. Commissioned by local developer Constructa Plus, the architectural studio CDF Architekci, led by Karol Fiedor, prepared a project that called for the construction of a faithful replica of the late 19th century tenement house and the expansion of the complex with an additional residential wing. Two years later, "Zelazko" impresses again - with its original volume, precisely reconstructed details, new functionalities and a number of contemporary architectural solutions.

Modernity meets history once again

The historic part of the complex, crowned by a recognizable turret, perfectly harmonizes with the modern style of the apartment building. Both parts have a residential function, and the whole is complemented by a two-story underground parking garage and retail and service premises. On the roof of the building, in place of the raised attic, residential units with terraces were created, whose greenery corresponds to the revitalized square. The all-access green zone promotes recreation in this part of the city and makes the building even more friendly. Modern architectural thought in the building on the side of Krysiewicza Street can also be seen in the choice of building materials, including aluminum systems.

Among other things, the brand-new part of the building uses aluminum window frames, balcony and terrace doors. For the purposes of the project, we recommended one of our state-of-the-art window and door systems, which is MB-70. Thanks to its excellent insulation and acoustic parameters, the system makes it possible to create many demanding exterior building elements, including windows, doors, display windows and spatial structures, providing comfort, warmth and silence for residents. Thanks to its use, it has also been possible to significantly reduce the year-round loss of heat, without losing anything from the aesthetics of performance. This is because the shape of the profiles makes it possible to obtain slender yet durable door and window constructions with high resistance to burglary, even in the RC4 class (MB-70RC4 version). In addition, part of this system is the MB-70 Hidden Leaf system, which allowed the installation of wings invisible from the outside of the building. The resulting lightness of the structure perfectly fit in with the historic character of the neighboring buildings," says Bożena Ryszka, ALUPROF SA marketing and PR director.

Additional safety for the residents of "Żelazek" was ensured by the use of the MB-60EI system, on the basis of which double-leaf fire doors were created. Also noteworthy is the modern aluminum "semi-structural" facade of the new building with the effect of a uniform image of a smooth glass wall. Thanks to aluminum systems of the MB-SR50N EFEKT type from Aluprof, it was possible not only to achieve an impressive aesthetic effect, but also to illuminate the interiors, giving them a unique atmosphere. Not without significance here are the parameters of the facade in terms of thermal insulation - thanks to the tightness of the structure, the energy intensity of the building is significantly lower. The design of the facade was complemented by the MB-86 system with doors plugged into the facade, with glass glued to the leaf.

The realization has already been appreciated twice by a group of experts

The project itself has already received two prestigious awards. One of them is the Architecture Budma Award 2020. The competition in cooperation with the BUDMA fair is organized every year by the Polish Chamber of Architects, whose Jury appreciated the new "Iron" for the outstanding aesthetics of the building, quality of workmanship and functionality of the facility. In turn, the TOP Builder 2020 Distinction in the "Investment" category (awarded by the industry monthly "Builder") for a residential and commercial building went to the architectural firm, investor and general contractor PORR SA.
