from the series "Green solutions - trends, technologies 2025"
In an era of increasing urbanization and progressive climate change, cities are looking for solutions to meet today's environmental challenges. One of the most effective ways to combine the functionality of buildings with ecological concerns are green roofs. These innovative structures, based on systems such as the swissporGREEN System, are not only changing the face of urban architecture, but, above all, are actively contributing to improving the quality of life for residents and balancing the urban ecosystem.

An ecological bastion in the concrete jungle
Cities, often referred to as "concrete jungles," are struggling with the urban heat island effect, air pollution and the scarcity of green spaces. Green roofs are an effective answer to these problems. SwissporGREEN System dedicated to extensive as well as intensive green roofs provides a comprehensive solution, combining the waterproofing function with the possibility of introducing vegetation.
The structure of such a roof is a precisely designed system of layers. Layers of underlay membranes from the swissporBIKUTOP or swissporBIKUTOP standard group and anti-root membranes from the swissporBIKUTOP group (e.g., swisspor BIKUTOP EP5 WF flam) are installed on a suitably prepared substrate. This system protects the building structure from plant root penetration and moisture, while allowing the growth of a variety of vegetation that thrives in urban conditions.
Multidimensional environmental benefits
SwissporGREEN System green roofs act as natural air filters. Vegetation absorbs particulate matter and carbon dioxide, helping to reduce smog and improve air quality. What's more, green roof systems act as natural retention reservoirs, retaining rainwater and returning it gradually to the atmosphere through evaporation from plant and soil surfaces.
With extreme weather events such as heavy rains becoming more frequent, the water retention capacity of green roofs is becoming particularly important. The drainage-accumulation layer, retention system and flow regulators at roof drains effectively regulate water runoff, relieving the burden on municipal sewer systems.

Thermal insulation and energy efficiency
An important aspect of the swissporGREEN System for green roofs is its excellent thermal insulation. The swissporXPS 300 boards used in the system ensure high thermal resistance of the partition, which translates into a significant reduction in the heat transfer coefficient to values that meet the restrictive standards (≤ 0.15 W/m²K) required by current building regulations.
Thanks to the thermal insulation layer and the natural insulation provided by the earth substrate and vegetation, green roofs effectively protect buildings from overheating in summer and heat loss in winter. This translates directly into a reduction in energy demand for air conditioning and heating, which consequently leads to a reduction in CO₂ emissions associated with energy production.
Architectural dimension of green roofs
Green roofs in the swissporGREEN system are not only an ecological solution, but also an element that shapes the aesthetics of urban space. The introduction of natural elements on the roofs of buildings softens the austere, industrial character of the development, creating a harmonious combination of architecture and nature, which is an extremely attractive option in many respects for a modern roof covering next to ceramic tiles, such as KODA or SIMPLA, or cement tiles KIOTO or KAPSTADT offered by CREATON Polska.
In the case of green roofs, SEDUM plants, recommended in the swissporGREEN system, are characterized not only by their resistance to harsh urban conditions, but also by their aesthetic value - they change their appearance depending on the season, enlivening the urban landscape. In addition, the system provides for the construction of 500 mm wide gravel bands, which provide an additional aesthetic element while serving a technical function.

Durability and safety
The swissporGREEN System for green roofs guarantees the durability and safety of the structure. Special anti-root membranes effectively protect against root overgrowth, and the layered system using accumulation and drainage mats, geotextiles for diffusion, protection and filtration ensures the proper functioning of the entire system for many years.
Green roofs in the swissporGREEN system provide a comprehensive solution that combines ecological, practical and aesthetic functions. Faced with the challenges of climate change and increasing urbanization, such solutions are becoming not just an option, but a necessity in the design of modern, sustainable cities. The introduction of green roofs is an investment in the future - in a healthier, more sustainable and friendly urban environment for current and future generations.
