With the replacement or installation of windows you do not have to wait until spring at all! Thanks to modern technologies and proper preparation, it is also possible in winter. Here are some key tips on how to install windows in winter to avoid problems and ensure long-term tightness.
Use warm window installation
In winter conditions, it is worth betting on warm installation, also known as layered installation. It consists of three layers:
-
Inner layer - an airtight vapor barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the interior of the house and protects insulation materials from dampness.
-
Middle layer - polyurethane foam, which provides thermal and acoustic insulation. It is important to use foam dedicated to low temperatures, which cures in winter conditions.
-
Outer layer - vapor-permeable tape, which protects against the penetration of moisture from the outside. At the same time, it allows moisture to evaporate from the middle layer. This avoids dampening the foam and reducing its insulating properties.
Warm installation not only improves the thermal performance of windows, but also extends their life, reducing the risk of thermal bridges and condensation on the panes.

Prepare the window opening and check the weather
Before installation, make sure the window opening is clean, dry and free of frost. If necessary, remove old sealing materials and check the condition of the masonry surface. Avoid installation in extremely cold weather. Most of the installation foam on the market can be used down to -10°C, but there is also a special winter foam that is suitable even at -20°C. It is important that the application temperature is in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
Use the right tools and materials
Winter installation foam - choose one that retains its properties at low temperatures. Check that the product is certified and recommended for winter use.
Sealing tapes - in winter conditions it is important that the tapes are flexible and easy to apply. Choose products with improved resistance to frost and moisture.
Heating tools - in case of very cold temperatures, you can use a heat blower or a heat gun to gently heat the surface of the window opening or the sealing materials themselves. Avoid overheating, however, so as not to damage the materials.
Mounting anchors and screws - choose fasteners with a suitable anti-corrosion coating, especially if the installation takes place in humid conditions.
In addition, remember to keep your work area well lit, especially during short winter days. LED lights on tripods can significantly improve the comfort and accuracy of installation.

Work quickly and accurately
In winter, it is crucial to limit the amount of time a window opening remains unprotected. Work in small sections and, even before applying the foam, make sure all the pieces are well aligned.
Secure windows after installation
Once the work is complete, make sure all gaps are properly filled. Leaving open spots can lead to thermal bridges and heat loss.
