Building ceramics in architectural projects - a review of Röben clay roof tiles

01 of April '25

from the series "Roofs, accessories - trends, technologies 2025"

Designing a roof is not only a decision about its geometry, but also about the roofing material, which determines the aesthetics, durability and functionality of the entire body of the building. The choice of roofing material has a significant impact not only on the architectural perception, but also on the functional parameters of the building - its weather resistance, acoustics and even energy efficiency.

In the context of contemporary design needs, it is worth taking a look at Röben's clay roof tiles - including the novelty black glazed BERGAMO, which responds to the current expectations of designers in both the individual and multifamily construction segments.

Ceramic tiles with universal design potential

Ceramic is a building material with centuries of history behind it, and at the same time it is ideally suited to the needs of modern architecture. Ceramic tiles offer durability counted in decades, resistance to changing weather conditions, as well as unique and unchanging aesthetics. From the designer's point of view, other properties are also important:

  • modularity and dimensional precision, allowing control over the roof detail,

  • the ability to choose different finishes (engobe, glaze) and colors,

  • compatibility with roof ventilation systems and roof accessories,

  • multi-variant installation solutions, important for projects with varying slopes and complex geometry.

BERGAMO - a tile for modern architecture

BERGAMO clay tile is the answer to the demand for aesthetics of pure form and homogeneous surface. It is a flat tile that works well for both gabled roofs and more complicated slopes.

Distinguishing features of BERGAMO:

  • Flat form and smooth surface - preferred for modern, minimalist blocks.

  • Precise locking system - a very important detail to ensure the tightness of the slope at low angles of inclination (from 25°).

  • Color scheme - with a variety of finishes - with a deep, saturated color, which harmonizes well and emphasizes different types of facade materials, i.e. plaster, clinker, glass or wood.

  • Consumption of about 12 pcs/m² - a compact format that allows flexible shaping of roof slopes.

BERGAMO is available in 3 color variants: black glazed, anthracite engobed and platinum engobed, which gives the designer a wider spectrum of color choices.

Overview of other Röben clay roof tiles

Röben tiles include several complementary models - each corresponding to different design goals. In addition to BERGAMO, the range includes models:

  • MILANO - is a classic shape and versatile use. A classic tile called a Dutch tile, the so-called S-shaped. Ideal for historic buildings with traditional character. It is distinguished by its high displacement, as much as 41 mm, which allows the tile to fit precisely to the existing structure, facilitates installation and reduces the need to modify the roof truss. This is particularly important during renovation, as it reduces the cost and time of the work.

  • PIEMONT - an excellent choice for new and renovated roofs. Two-wave form. Installation tolerance of as much as 38 mm makes it easy to match the covering to the existing rafter framing of renovated roofs. It also works well on new roofs making installation much easier. Available in 7 colors and 3 types of finishes.

  • MONZA - is a fast and economical covering. A proposal with a larger format of about 46,4 cm x 30,4 cm, which makes installation fast and economical. Only about 9.5 pieces are needed to cover 1m2 of slope. It is perfect for large and uncomplicated slopes. Available in 7 colors and 3 types of finishes.

The key advantage of Röben clay tiles is the material from which they are made. This is high-quality clay, which undergoes a firing process at temperatures of more than 1,000 degrees. This process gives clay tiles exceptional resistance to various weather conditions, making them an excellent choice for decades.
