Why opt for the PRINZ method when dehumidifying a building?

02 of December '22

The factors that initiate destructive processes and cause the most danger in building structures are water, moisture, salts, acids and alkalis that cause all kinds of mold, fungi, salt efflorescence and masonry erosion. These occur in rain, snow, fog, or ground water and do damage to, among other things, building foundations, walls and other above- and below-ground parts of buildings.

Why opt for the PRINZ method when drying a building?

Establishing new horizontal insulation in an existing building using the cutting method - masonry drying with PRINZ technology.
Destroyed, poorly laid horizontal insulation of the building's foundation walls or the lack of it allows capillary rise of ground water. Water molecules migrate through microchannels toward areas with lower water saturation. The pulling moisture contributes to technical degradation (salt efflorescence, plaster falling off, masonry spreading) of ground floor masonry and walls of upper floors. Stopping this process is necessary.

The most common causes of dampness in building walls

- Technical defects in rainwater drainage systems, direct action of water through damaged roofs or drain pipes.
- Condensation of water vapor in the building envelope due to diffusion, lack of ventilation, improper use of concretes and mortars in renovations and retrofits.
- Capillary rise of water from the ground through damaged / improperly installed horizontal insulation of the building foundation walls or lack thereof.
In renovation work, laying horizontal insulation by cutting the building walls is increasingly important. Professionally performed work gives 100% protection against rising damp.

Overview of the method

- Determination of existing ducts and other obstructions. Uncovering the working joint in brick masonry.
- Cutting the masonry with chainsaws PMS 25, EED 3,5 or PES 1300 - for brick masonry or diamond wire saw LP1 - for concrete or stone masonry, in sections of about 1.0 m, depending on building and static conditions. Preparation of the base of the joint for insulation.
- Insert a waterproofing board, made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester (minimum thickness 1.2 mm) or HD polyethylene (thickness 2 mm), so that it protrudes from the masonry to the thickness of the plaster. Board sections are laid with an overlap of min. 10 cm. At the point where the film is joined, wedges are driven to press the two sheets together.
- Wedges of the appropriate thickness are driven into the cut gap using a hammer. Plastic wedges can withstand a load of min. 500 kg/cm2. Spacing between wedges max. 25 cm over the entire section of the wall.
- Closing the gap with mortar on all sides, leaving holes between each row of wedges, for final filling of the gap. Injection under pressure of 5 bar of cement mortar with auxiliary agents that cause, among other things, its swelling on setting.

Application of the method guarantees

- Absolute cut-off of capillary rise of ground water, which will lead to spontaneous drying of walls, with elimination of other causes of dampness and ensuring adequate ventilation of rooms.
- Improving the microclimate of the building.
- Reducing thermal losses.
- Exclusion of cyclic renovation and repair of masonry, plaster and paint coatings.

The certified equipment and materials used for insulation are manufactured by the Austrian company PRINZ GmbH & Co KG.

Why should you decide on the PRINZ method when dehumidifying a building?

- Immediately after the service, we obtainpermanent and immediate isolation from capillary risingdamp.
- Professional execution of the service guarantees 100% protection against capillary moisture, until the end of the technical life of the building.
- Horizontal insulation is made of thick, solid polyethylene or polyester panels reinforced with fiberglass, resistant to damage, chemicals present in the masonry and not subject to corrosion.
- Regardless of the type of building material and the degree of moisture in the walls of the building, the method uses the same insulation materials, always completely preventing rising damp.
- PRINZ technology does not affect the statics - the settlement of the building. Appropriate linear speed of cutting tools and slow cutting feeds do not cause major vibrations during undercutting. Cutting in meter sections and appropriate wedging of the building completely prevents its settlement, there is no problem of cracking of walls. The method is completely safe for the building. Any cavities in the masonry are filled with mortar injected at a pressure of 4-5 bar, with auxiliary agents that cause, among other things, its swelling when it sets.
- Compared with other methods of dehumidification: the effectiveness of the method is not affected by such factors as electromagnetic interference or a possible power outage; there is no need for subsequent service tests and the state of moisture in the walls.
- Quick and efficient execution of the service - for example, the laying of new horizontal insulation in a single-family house with dimensions of 10×10 m, with a wall thickness of 0.5 m (a total of about 20 m2 of wall area) takes about 3 working days.
- The fixed cost of performing the service calculated per m2 of insulated wall surface, regardless of its thickness or degree of dampness.
