Precious concrete pavements - durability, safety and ecology

28 of October '25

from the series "Road, communication infrastructure - trends, technologies 2025"

Public space and urban architecture are increasingly becoming the object of creative activities of designers and designers. Equally important as the body of the building today is the space around it - small architecture, greenery elements and perfectly chosen pavement. Here with help comes noble concrete, which in recent years has been winning the hearts of architects, offering not only modern design, but also impressive durability and ease of care. Precious concrete slabs are characterized by anti-slip, low water absorption, frost resistance and resistance to mechanical damage and external factors. These properties are particularly appreciated by investors, as they translate into trouble-free use of the surface for many years.

For pavements subjected to continuous pedestrian and vehicular traffic (including heavy vehicles), which are additionally expected to meet high visual requirements, the DASAG brand of fine concrete will be ideal.

DASAG's offer includes not only anti-slip paving slabs in a variety of formats and color and finish variants, but also slabs with tactile signage for the blind and visually impaired, environmentally friendly pavements such as non-absorbent heat or photocatalytic slabs, landscaping elements and much more.

Tactile signage for the blind and visually impaired

An indispensable part of projects implemented in the spirit of universal design are pavements equipped with tactile signage for the blind and visually impaired.

DASAG's offer includes durable, prefabricated guiding (corrugated) and warning elements (plates with buttons) that meet the requirements of DIN 32984, the Architectural Guidelines for Passenger Infrastructure Ipi-1, enacted by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., as well as the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of May 16, 2023. on the technical conditions to be met by subway structures and their location.

Tactile paths and warning signs significantly improve the safety and comfort of users of such facilities as bus and streetcar stops, railroad stations, subway stations or airports. In addition to the specific texture, the elements of the signage, as well as the first and last step of the stair run in public facilities, should be characterized by a high degree of contrast. A wide range of color variants allows to design pavements, characterized by a high degree of contrast, confirmed by LRV tests.

Tackling urban heat islands

The large concrete surfaces of buildings and traffic routes in city centers heat up rapidly and hold the absorbed heat for a long time during the summer months. The difference between the temperature in the center of larger cities and their outskirts can be as much as a dozen degrees. This phenomenon, known as urban heat islands, is a real problem for many places on the map of Poland and Europe in the era of global warming. It is worth knowing that the right building materials can be an effective tool in the fight against the urban heat island effect.

Indigo Prato (patterns 7430, 7431) and Promenada Prato (pattern 7431) panels are solutions designed to achieve the highest possible SRI. Their absorption of heat emitted by the sun has been significantly reduced, so that the use of the panels at the investment level is able to reduce the cooling needs of buildings, and at the scale of the immediate environment and the entire agglomeration, reduce the urban heat island effect. The SRI for formula 7430 is 86.0, while that for formula 7431 is 73.1.

Photocatalytic panels

Air pollution and smog are also a problem for large cities, especially acute in the autumn and winter months. The solution to combating smog may be the right pavement. Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide TiO2 used in the top layer of the Aria slab from DASAG allows the removal by photocatalysis of harmful NOx nitrogen oxides found in air polluted by, for example, exhaust fumes. Aria concrete slabs are able to reduce air pollution and enable the fight against smog. Titanium dioxide is completely safe for the environment and is not leached during operation, so it is present throughout the life cycle of the concrete element. Only UV radiation occurring in sunlight is required to initiate the purification process. An additional advantage of oxidation is the self-cleaning of the slab surface from various types of organic dirt.

Realizations

DASAG products have been used in many infrastructural objects on the map of Poland and Europe, and the Dmowskiego Roundabout or Jana Pawła II Avenue are just some of the places in the capital transformed by precast concrete elements from the DASAG brand.

Particularly noteworthy, however, is the metamorphosis of the Five Corners Square in Warsaw with DASAG slabs in the leading role. The large-format concrete slabs from DASAG were intended not only to reflect the designers' vision and be consistent with the architectural surroundings, but above all to functionally and safely serve the residents of the capital for decades to come. Approximately 1,600 square meters of the Square were covered with 50x50x8 cm slabs, 160 linear meters were slabs that were elements of warning systems for the blind and visually impaired, and the remaining approximately 1,500 square meters were covered with several hundred large-format slabs, most of which were prepared in a format of approximately 2x2 meters. Products in a variety of unusual shapes were developed for the project in order to fit precisely into the urban fabric. Interestingly, the architectural design was so unusual that in part of the slabs, several thousand cut stones were manually arranged based on a matrix developed by the square's designers. The design was complemented by slab-colored seating, rainwater and lamp openings, a fountain, slabs at sewer, electrical and teletechnical manholes, and a prefabricated overrun ramp.

DASAG concrete slabs also adorn the Historic Promenade in Swinoujscie. The main idea behind the revitalization of the promenade was, on the one hand, to emphasize its historical character, and on the other hand, to give the project a modern touch. Such a duo provides an ideal backdrop for the buildings listed in the provincial register of historical monuments, as well as blends with small architecture, ubiquitous greenery and a completely new pavement, for the construction of which DASAG concrete slabs were used. Taking into account the assumptions of the project and the specific nature of the site, the investor relied on "tailor-made" solutions, made to order. This is how DASAG concrete slabs in a wide range of colors, which perfectly correspond with the composition of the surroundings, appeared on the construction site. During the construction of the Historic Promenade in Swinoujscie, nearly 14 thousand square meters of DASAG concrete slabs were used in 60x60x8 cm and 60x30x8 cm formats in fashionable shades of white, graphite and brown, which was created especially for this unusual seaside project.

DASAG products were also incorporated into the surface of the promenade in Kolobrzeg, where three contrasting colors of 80x20x8 cm slabs were used, adapted for use on a fire road. Deciding to make the slabs using airtight hydraulic presses with a pressure of 600 T and installing reinforcement in the material at the same time, it was possible to exceed the investor's expectations. Thanks to the use of steel rebar, an average strength of 19.1 MPa was achieved, while maintaining the exclusive appearance of the product.

Another impressive investment where DASAG products have made their home is the Malopolska Science Center COGITEON , for which more than 9,000 m2 of 50x50x8 cm slabs were delivered in a color matching the color of the facade. The surface of the panels was roughened to the R11 anti-slip class and impregnated.

City squares, sidewalks and promenades are places exposed to constant use. So there is no room for compromise in this case - the materials used must not only be durable and safe, but also aesthetically pleasing. After all, on the combination of these features depends the final effect of the entire investment and trouble-free use for many years.
