Patina forming process
Initially, the steel begins to rust in the same way as ordinary carbon steel when exposed to wet and dry conditions. But as time passes, the rust layer turns into a thick layer of patina that seals the surface of the steel and prevents further corrosion. The color changes from a fresh orange-brown to a light and finally dark brown.

The rate of change and the final color of the steel depend on atmospheric conditions and air quality. Environments with a high concentration of sulfur accelerate the oxidation process and result in a darker patina. The faster oxidation process is also affected by alternating cycles of wet and dry atmospheric conditions.
