Hydromedia - water-permeable concrete for sustainable cities

from the series "Road, communications infrastructure - trends, technologies 2025"

Local governments today face one of the greatest challenges of modern times: the need to adapt quickly and effectively to changing climatic and environmental conditions. The effects of climate change are increasingly being felt, with more frequent and intense rainfall affecting urban infrastructure that is unprepared for it. The answer to these challenges is Hydromedia's innovative water-permeable concrete, which is designed to intelligently manage rainwater in urban spaces. Thanks to its unique structure devoid of fine fractions, the material allows water to soak into the ground quickly, significantly relieving the burden on sewer systems.

Hydromedia is a water-permeable, all-purpose pavement that allows very fast drainage of rainwater into the ground or sewer systems. It also prevents the effect of local flooding, acting as a reservoir of water in case of sudden and heavy rainfall. This environmentally friendly solution that drains rainwater into the ground also promotes the natural circulation of water in nature.

Concrete ideal in the construction of bicycle paths

Water-permeable concrete is widely used in various urban and rural areas. It can be used for the construction of sidewalks, parking lots, plazas, bicycle paths and even roads with low traffic volumes of up to 3.5 tons. Its use is particularly effective in parks, playgrounds and other areas where it is important to preserve the natural circulation of water.

An example of an investment using water-permeable concrete is a pedestrian and bicycle path in Cracow on the Ore Mountains River. The total length of the section that was created is almost 7 km, 85% of which was made by Holcim. The paved road made of water-permeable concrete replaced a muddy path, which was unfit for use during and after rains. Now city residents can enjoy a clean and durable solution that performs its function regardless of weather conditions.

Advantages of using Hydromedia concrete

Hydromedia used in the fabric of urban infrastructure reduces the phenomenon of surface runoff, relieves pressure on storm drains and supports the functioning of urban vegetation ecosystems. The solution makes it possible to design and revitalize green public space, which has a positive impact on the environment and the comfort of residents.

Hydromedia's permeability can reach up to 1,000 liters per minute per square meter, keeping the pavement safe and dry even during heavy rainfall. Its innovation lies not only in efficient drainage, but also in supporting the natural hydrological cycle. Hydromedia promotes plant irrigation, reduces the risk of urban flooding and contributes to lower temperatures in overheated urban areas.

Traditional concrete and asphalt absorb the sun's heat and give it away at night, leading to higher temperatures and contributing to the formation of so-called urban heat islands. Hydromedia, thanks to its structure, has less thermal inertia, resulting in less heating and giving up heat when the temperature outside drops. It also promotes water evaporation, which contributes to cooling the surface and increasing its moisture content.

Hydromedia concrete, together with permeable layers in the substructure (anti-compaction substructure), also allows for improved habitat conditions for newly planted trees. Traditional paved surfaces are unfriendly to plants. Holcim Poland's solution allows vegetation to grow near paved areas, which helps increase urban biodiversity. Such vegetation not only improves the aesthetics of urban space, but also performs important ecological functions.

The use of Hydromedia water-permeable concrete is part of the concept of sustainable urban development. Increasing permeable surfaces, promoting green spaces and effectively managing rainwater are key elements of sustainable urbanism.
