Between home and garden. How to arrange a moody balcony?

27 of July '22

How about creating an oasis of calm and a cozy, romantic nook on the balcony? Arranging such a place can be an unusual challenge and a wonderful adventure at the same time. It will not be too expensive an investment, and the effect in the form of a soothing space will compensate us for all our efforts. No matter how large a balcony we have, we are able to transform it into a special place.

A balcony is a space that is both part of the house and part of the garden. Thus, it combines both styles.

Where to start?

If we want to be able to walk around the balcony barefoot, it will be necessary to take care of the ground. We can line it with ceramic, stone or concrete tiles, or give it a warm look by laying terrace panels. Some work may require hiring a repair crew. Some people also use less natural solutions on balconies and terraces, such as rubber panels or artificial grass, which will certainly change the character of the place, but will not necessarily give us a favorable natural atmosphere. Keep in mind that plastic carpets should be laid on a finished floor.

In addition to the ground, we may want to change the color of the balcony walls. The most common is the color of the facade, but we can allow ourselves a bit of madness and decorate our cozy corner with a slightly more distinctive color, or even an extremely different one. However, it is good that it is a shade more optimistic than gloomy.

If we want to hide from the intense sun, gusts of wind or simply from the sight of curious neighbors, we can hang a fabric, or a bamboo or cane mat on the balcony.

Green space

A substitute for a garden mood will, of course, be created by plants. So, when spring is peeking through the windows, let's put out on the balcony pots with flowers that like a lot of sunlight. Tall grasses, plants with large leaves, but also those with colorful flowers will look great here. Let's keep in mind both the usual ones, as well as the dangling or climbing ones. A green wall will certainly provide solace during warm summer evenings. Flower pots, preferably in oblong form, we can wrap in stylish, decorative covers.

The most popular flower for the balcony is the geranium. It is easy to care for, and resistant to drought and wind gusts. Plants with dangling stems that look beautiful on the balcony are also surfinias, lobelias, petunias or fuchsias.

Balcony furniture

In order for us to make full use of the balcony space, let's put comfortable furniture there. They can be both new, but also old copies will look great , after appropriate restoration. First of all, let's ensure that we can relax in a comfortable armchair and put an aromatic coffee on a small but functional table. Furniture made of wicker or rattan will present itself beautifully here. If the balcony is too small, an excellent solution will be a bench and a folding top, attached to the wall or railings.

Atmospheric lighting

A very important aspect is to take care of proper lighting for the balcony. A few brightening elements will create a unique atmosphere. Lanterns, for example, are a very romantic detail. They protect the flames of traditional candles from gusts of wind. We can also put an artificial candle inside, which will be powered by batteries.

Another idea that will soothe our senses before an evening's sleep are string lights. Loosely strung, or clustered in a glass vessel, they will shine beautifully in the color and shape of your choice.

There can also be a ceiling lamp, or a wall lamp. Depending on the style of our arrangement, let's choose those more industrial, modern, or, of course, reliably classic.
