Green up your bathroom

07 of June '22

We associate the bathroom primarily with cleanliness, sterility. Because of this, often the arrangements of this interior can seem unfriendly or even boring. How to give the bathroom a unique character? The answer is plants.

Plants for the bathroom

This idea may seem controversial to some. Cleanliness and nature are unlikely to go hand in hand. However, we can "tame" vegetation and introduce it as a design element in the bathroom. Small potted plants will work best here, of course. It will be easiest for us to keep them clean. We can place such decoration near the sink, as well as on cabinets and shelves. An interesting option is also to put a vase in which we will place cut flowers. This will definitely add color to the interior. In addition, a beautiful fragrance will make the morning toilet more pleasant. In larger rooms, we can place a pot with a large plant on the floor. Especially beautiful will look those with spreading leaves. Located near the bathtub, they will compose beautifully with its whiteness. For owners of showers, an intriguing option may be to place a climbing plant on their wall.

A touch of the tropics

The bathroom is an ideal place for plants of tropical origin. Usually, we find it hard to grow them at home. However, the prevailing heat and humidity in the bathroom will allow them to grow beautifully. One such plant is Pilea, or the popular money plant. It is best to set it in a place with access to diffused light and away from radiators. Another is bamboo. There are two species to choose from - Peace Bamboo (Pogonatherum paniceum) and Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana). The palm tree will also feel great in a humid and sunny bathroom. A plant of tropical origin is also a popular ficus. However, you need to remember to set it in a more shady place. The difficulties of growing a monstera can be solved just by placing it in the bathroom. The natural habitat of this plant is a tropical forest. So the bathroom will meet its humidity level requirements.

What flowers for a bathroom without a window?

Every plant needs light to grow. However, we can "cheat" them a little and illuminate them with artificial light. There are professional horticultural lights available on the market. However, ordinary LED lamps will also do their job. It is best to place them about 40 cm above the plants. To receive the right amount of light, the bulbs should be on for about 12 hours a day. It is worth thinking about this before placing flowers. Another solution is to buy two of the same plants. Then we place one of them in the bathroom, and the other in a properly lighted room, for example, on a windowsill. Then after about 10 days we swap the plants in places. For a better effect, we can plant them in identical pots. However, we need to choose a species that tolerates well a prolonged lack of light. Herbaceous, fiddlehead, fern, sanseweria and zamiokulkas will work great.

Light plants for the bathroom

A light-colored bathroom gives us much more room for creativity. For example, we can choose flowering plants such as Chinese rose. This plant is distinguished by its beautiful, large flowers. Alocasia will also add color. The plant has ornate, glossy leaves with a characteristic shape. There are specimens with white, cream or yellow venation or purple leaf undersides. Different species also have a more or less wavy appearance. In smaller bathrooms, phytonias will be a great choice. They reach a maximum of 30 cm. They are available in several color varieties, so they will fit into many arrangements. Orchids, which are problematic to cultivate, will also be perfect in the bathroom. The plant should be placed in a place with diffused light. However, they should not be placed near a window. Orchids very much dislike gusts of wind.
