Less is more. Warsaw apartment in japandi style

11 of May '23

The architects from the Decoroom studio - Małgorzata Kasperek and Katarzyna Fotek - took great care in designing an apartment with an economical but striking form. The style, which combines the tenets of Japanese and Scandinavian philosophies, worked perfectly to create a soothing retreat for two young investors.

An oasis of calm in the big city

Japandi style is a combination of Scandinavian minimalism and Japanese Zen philosophy. It is characterized by the use of natural materials, organic structures and earthy colors. These elements build an atmosphere conducive to tranquility. No wonder, then, that this style is gaining popularity among people seeking inner harmony and tranquility. This was also the case for the owners of the presented 125-square-meter apartment on the outskirts of Warsaw. The space required significant changes to the functional layout proposed by the developer. In order to open up the space, and thus fit it into the established style, it was decided to demolish several walls. The changes made the interiors spacious, well-lit and orderly. The dominant colors of both styles are earthy: broken whites, beiges, grays, but also typically Far Eastern browns and black, as well as muted green, which in Japan symbolizes peace and optimism.

Functional division

The open living area creates a visually harmonious whole, in which the functions of individual rooms have been clearly marked. The lounge area has been symbolically separated from the dining area by a sofa and armchairs in scandi style. In keeping with the stylistic concept, their upholstered seats with soft lines and curved edges attract attention with their refined shapes and elaborate details. Next to them is a low minimalist table made of light wood, clearly referring to traditional Japanese design. Here you won't find any unnecessary decorations or details that would distract from the carefully selected furniture and clean planes of the wall coverings. The same is true in the dining room, whose focal point is a large table with a simple, traditional form and wooden chairs. The light, subdued color scheme is contrasted with the dark floor.

Expressive kitchen

The kitchen area also features wood, but with a dark coloration. Made by Decoroom carpentry and designed by Katarzyna Fotek, the kitchen cabinetry impresses with fronts finished in smoked oak veneer. The framed fronts are a strong decorative accent in this minimalist space. The effect is enhanced by the absence of upper cabinets, which the architect consciously gave up to add lightness to the interior, so desirable in the japanese aesthetic. In accordance with the adopted style, the oak fronts of the cabinets perform another essential function here - they bring the interior closer to nature. This idea is also emphasized by the dark floor exposing the stone drawing and the original white kitchen countertop with a porous, organic structure.

Bathrooms decorated with the environment in mind

The arrangement of the kitchen space is also alluded to by the finish of the two bathrooms. They have been kept in a similar dark color scheme. In both bathrooms we find tiles inspired by the drawing and texture of stone, which are warmed by wooden tile decors. In the bathroom with a shower, the whole is complemented by a palette of subdued earth colors and in the one equipped with a bathtub - black. Designers paid a lot of attention to the selection of appropriate bathroom accessories. With such a minimalist arrangement, they are the decoration. In addition, high-quality furnishings are inseparable from the assumptions of the japanese style. Robust and durable items stay with us for years, so we do not litter the environment and take care of our planet.

Soothing bedroom

The bedroom was also kept in a light palette of nature colors, warmed by wood and cozy fabrics. The furniture, limited to a minimum, with a simple, economical form and clean lines, does not disturb the peace and harmony that prevails here. Selected furnishings and subtle decorations encourage relaxation. Actually, the only decoration in this room is the wall behind the bed painted in a darker shade than the others. It is a beautiful shade of khaki, which fits perfectly with the references to nature.
