Apartment full of light in Poznań's Grunwald district

17 of April '23

The apartment, designed by the LBWA studio , is located in the tranquility of the small streets and backyard gardens of Stary Grunwald district. The architects' attention was drawn to the light coming into the apartment from the side of the garden belonging to the building, as well as the original oak parquet floor.

Secret passage

It was necessary to change the functional layout. Originally, the apartment consisted of two large rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. However, the investors wanted to separate an additional room for a home office. As a result, the kitchen was moved and connected to the living room, creating an annex. Meanwhile, a small office and a dressing room were arranged in the place where the kitchen was located. The original doorway connecting the former kitchen with the bedroom was not bricked up, so that behind the fronts of the closet located in the bedroom, there is a passage to the dressing room.

Light and space

The old oak parquet floor was preserved and restored throughout the apartment. The architects proposed to connect the living room with the bedroom by designing a large glass window between them. This made use of the daylight entering the apartment and exposed the view of the surrounding greenery. This solution gave a sense of greater spaciousness. Necessary privacy is provided by delicate curtains, although, as the owners themselves admit, the combination of the two rooms, the light and the feeling of large space meant that they rarely feel the need to draw them.

Kitchen simplicity

Due to the functional layout, in which the kitchen became part of the living room, the architects wanted to give it a complementary and coherent form, so that it did not dominate the space. A low row of kitchen cabinets with wooden fronts in smoked oak was complemented by a simple line of hanging cabinets in a shade of warm gray. The countertop and the delicate wall band were made of natural stone. The refrigerator was hidden in an alcove, so it does not disturb the form of the kitchen as a simple piece of furniture that is part of the living room.

Designer living area

In the center of the living area is a table with chairs, which are gems of Danish design. The furniture is perfectly matched with a bookcase specially made by local craftsmen. The living area is complemented by a light and bright sofa.

Minimalist bathroom

The space where the bathroom was originally located was arranged in such a way as to isolate an additional small utility room with space for a washing machine and hot water heater. This solution made it possible to create a functional bathroom with a clean and simple form. The materials used were kept to a minimum. Bright, large tiles form a uniform plane on the floor and the wall with the shower and toilet bowl. A stronger accent is provided by a wooden cabinet with a stone top and sink. A large mirror further illuminates and enlarges the space.
